Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology)
Zi Wei Dou Shu is one of the most important branches of traditional Chinese astrology. It involves creating a natal chart based on the year, month, day, and time of a person's birth to determine the positions of the twelve houses. By analyzing the combination of stars in each house, and linking it with the hexagrams of the I Ching (Yijing), this system predicts a person's life path, fortune, and various outcomes of good or bad events.
Compared to the Four Pillars of Destiny (Ba Zi), Zi Wei Dou Shu has older origins but shares a common ancestry, with both systems being recognized as the two major branches of traditional Chinese astrology. Zi Wei Dou Shu combines elements of Taoist cosmology with a focus on the individual’s relationship to society and human interactions. This system stands out in Chinese mystical culture and is considered one of the "Five Great Divinities" of Chinese astrology, often called the "First Divine System of the World."
The core philosophy of Zi Wei Dou Shu is rooted in the Taoist concept of the unity between heaven and man, as well as the theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. Based on this, the system utilizes the position of the auspicious and inauspicious stars in the Purple Star (Zi Wei) constellation at the center of the northern sky, and their movements relative to the Earth, to derive a person’s fate. This method has its own unique characteristics and approach.
The basic method of Zi Wei Dou Shu is to determine a person’s life palace based on their birth year, month, day, and time. From there, the system predicts aspects of their life such as social status, personality, wealth, health, and fortunes. The chart also includes predictions related to the twelve palaces: siblings, marriage, children, wealth, health, migration, friends, career, property, blessings, and parents. By observing the star groupings in each palace, the system assesses a person’s destiny.
Finally, the influence of the Four Transformation Stars (Hua Ke, Hua Lu, Hua Quan, and Hua Ji) is considered, tracking their movements and how these changes shape the individual’s life trajectory.
